at Extreme Rules – WWE News
WWE’s Pay-Per-View event, Extreme Rules started with a huge ‘Last Man Standing Match’ between the Viper, Randy Orton and CM Punk, at an event held in Tampa, Florida.
The Viper, Randy Orton sunk his fangs into the Second City Saviour, CM Punk again after WrestleMania XXVII. Orton was the last man standing in the ring over Punk.
The rivalry between both began in Royal Rumble 2011, on January 30, when Punk, with his New Nexus members interrupted in Orton’s Championship match against The Miz. Punk and New Nexus’ confrontation cost Orton the WWE Championship.
The Viper revenged his Championship loss on next day Monday Night Raw, punting Husky Harris in the skull. The Anonymous Raw General Manager set up the WrestleMania XXVII match between Orton and Punk.
The Viper took the stunning victory at WrestleMania XXVII. A number one contender match was fought between five superstars including Orton, on Monday Night Raw. New Nexus members David Otunga, Michael McGillicutty and Mason Ryan confronted again and cost
Orton the match.
On April 18, Punk challenged Orton for a WrestleMania XXVII re-match, which was easily won by Orton. After that victory, New Nexus attacked Orton again and Punk tried to injure him. Orton survived and treated Punk with an RKO, in front of other New Nexus
members.
The rivalry led towards the ‘Last Man Standing Match’ at the Extreme Rules, which would settle the score for both wrestlers. Orton entered the ring in emphatic fashion, with the packed-house behind the wrestler. Punk, on the other hand was accompanied by
New Nexus members Otunga, Ryan and McGillicutty. Raw GM then sent an e-mail that New Nexus members were banned from ringside.
The fight started and Orton began aggressively, throwing Punk into the barriers. The wrestlers clashed with punches, kicks and steel chair hits. During the match, Punk hit Orton with his finishing move, the GTS, but Orton recovered before the ten counts
by referee. Orton also hit the RKO, but could not retrieve victory as Punk stood up. Punk hit another GTS and threw Orton on steel stairs, but the Viper refused to go down this time also.
Punk tried to hit Orton with a cane, but he survived and hit the New Nexus member with the same cane repeatedly. Orton set up Punk on the top rope and dropped him with a fatal RKO. Punk could not stand on his feet until the ten counts and The Viper won the
match in convincing fashion. WWE fans were enthralled by Orton’s performance and applauded the Viper, as he made his way backstage.
