Randy Wolf wins his fifth as Milwaukee Brewers defeat Boston Red Sox 4 -2 – MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Saturday, June 18 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
It wasn’t as easy as the score suggests given a strong Boston batting line-up. Randy Wolf was made to work hard in the seven innings that he pitched conceding nine hits and two runs at an ERA of 3.15. He managed 72 strikes of the total 111 pitches with three
strike-outs. This resulted in him earning a fifth win of the season after four consecutive no-decisions.
Wolf was well supported by the relief pitchers Kameron Loe and John Axford. Loe held his 13th game of the season with Axford saving 19th for the season.
The scoring opened with Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart of the Brewers smashing back-to-back home-runs at the top of the first innings. The Red Sox were quick to reply in the second with Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz scoring successively.
Complimenting the batters of the Red Sox and citing the fear they impose, the Brewers’ manager Ron Roenicke said, "With their lineup, you can't relax on any batter. That's what makes it so impressive what Wolfie did."
It was George Kottaras’s 410 feet hit which earned him his second home-run for the season and put the Brewers into lead before Ryan Braun scored to seal the night.
Jon Lester lost his third game of the season conceding seven hits and four runs, including three mammoth hits for home-runs. His eight strike-outs for the game took his season tally to 95.
The relief pitchers in the ninth innings were just a formality as the show had already been sealed by the Brewers.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona, duly praised Wolf’s performance and stated that his pitching was really effective in the game. The variations, he said, were hard to pick. He was all praises for the fast ball that gets on the player.
The Brewers have now improved their record to 40-32, with their away record still lingering behind, they will have to pull their triggers soon enough to stay in contention.
The Red Sox, however, are comfortably placed at 42-28 and need to get back to winning ways to leave their mark this season. Having won the first game 10-4, there is every possibility of a Boston backlash.
The series is now well placed at 1-1 and it is ‘all to play’ on Sunday.
