Randy Wolf’s first win since April 30 as Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals – MLB News
Randy Wolf on Tuesday, July 17, won his first game since April 30 to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2. The closely fought game at Miller Park saw Francisco Rodriguez provided the much-needed help in bullpen to manage the stunning win.
Rodriguez’s being named a closer on Tuesday did the trick, with three-game series standing drawn now, after the Cardinals had won the first game 3-2.
Tuesday’s game also saw Cardinals’ Matt Holliday leaving the ballpark after a hit in the leg while Ryan Braun had to go due to right adductor strain in the seventh inning.
While injury might have been a worrying factor for the Cardinals with Holliday gone, Ryan Braun being removed was overshadowed by the Milwaukee Brewers’ win.
"It was nice," Brewers' manager Ron Roenicke said. "It was nice for Randy, too. He pitched a great game, comes out again with people on base and you don't know what's going to happen."
But the happiest moments were for Wolf who had to grapple with a lot challenges all this while
"It's been a very, I think, tumultuous year to say the least," Wolf said. "I've had my own personal demons to deal with, just my own frustrations. It's been tough emotionally more than anything."
Brewers scored the first run in the very first inning with Corey Hart hitting an RBI, allowing Aramis Ramirez to score. The Cardinals levelled the score in the third with Jon Jay’s double to left and Carlos Beltran made it 2-1 in the same inning with a sacrifice fly.
Aramis Ramirez singled to left in the bottom of the third inning to level the score and Rickie Weeks homered to left in the fourth to give the Milwaukee Brewers a supposedly safe 3-2 lead.
Francisco Rodriguez allowed two hits, but had a scoreless ninth to conclude the game with 3-2 victory for the Brewers. The Cardinals' Joe Kelly allowed three runs in his six-inning spell, while Cardinals’ Wolf, in his 6.2 innings allowed two runs with six strike-outs to his credit to win the game.
