http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758’s premier spinner, Rangana Herath, is optimistic about delivering the goods in the second Test of the three-match series against Australia at Melbourne and feels that he can exploit the home team’s lack of practice against quality spin bowling.
The Melbourne Test starts on December 26, with the home team presently leading the battle by one match to nil.
The Islanders’ bowling attack has suffered in the last couple of years, since the retirement of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 so far as the hosts scored more than 700 runs in the first fixture at Hobart.
Herath, who has been the pick of the Lankan bowlers this year, having being named as the Player of the Series in the recently finished Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 at home, picked up five wickets in the second innings of the Hobart Test, after bowling 26 wicket-less overs in the first.
While speaking to the reporters today, the left-arm spinner feels that the home team’s batsmen are not used to playing high-quality spinners, which should help the cricketer from Kurunegala to make an impression on the Boxing Day fixture.
"Definitely. I know that the Australians, playing even in domestic cricket, they are 80-90 per cent playing against fast bowlers," Herath expressed. “So with that, I have chances to get wickets bowling spin."
The Islanders were in a similar position last year as well, having lost the first Test of the series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 and company bounced back to square the series, with Herath taking nine wickets in the match.
The left-arm spinner is hopeful that his side will repeat the show against the Kangaroos as well.
"In South Africa, (it was) the same scenario," the seasoned cricketer added. "We lost against South Africa in the first Test and we came back strongly and we did well and we won against South Africa in that Boxing Day Test match. That was a remarkable one, because that's the only (Test) we have won against South Africa on their soil."
