Rangers' James Beattie tells Allan McGregor to reject Manchester United
Rangers forward James Beattie has urged his team-mate Allan McGregor to ignore talk of a potential move to Manchester United, insisting that the goalkeeper could achieve everything he wanted from his career at Ibrox.
Several media reports claimed on Thursday (14 October) that Sir Alex Ferguson was readying a £5m offer for the Scotland international with United’s number one Edwin van der Sar approaching the end of his career.
However, Beattie has urged the 28-year-old to remain with the Scottish Premier League champions as he told the Scottish Sun that Rangers must keep hold of their best players if they are to compete with Europe’s biggest clubs in continental competition.
'One of Europe's best goalkeepers'
Beattie said that: "Allan is probably one of the top keepers in Europe, I would have said. If he keeps playing like he is, then he is going to attract attention. Then it is up to himself and the club to sort out what he wants to do.
"I don't want him to go, but Allan could play anywhere. He is that sort of character. He is very focused and knows what he wants. He wants success and has been carrying a couple of injuries, but he plays through them because he wants to play, succeed and do
really well. I'm not surprised he's getting interest from top clubs like Manchester United. But it's very important that we keep hold of our top players."
McGregor has impressed with his performances over the last couple of years and in a match with Scotland against Spain on Tuesday, performed admirably against the considerable attacking threats of the world champions.
The goalkeeper has helped Rangers win the last two SPL titles as well as three Scottish Cups and four League Cups.
