Rangers' Kirk Broadfoot may return for Valencia clash
Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot is in line for a return to the first team when the Scottish Premier League champions take on Valencia in a UEFA Champions League group stage match on Wednesday, 20 October.
The Scotland international has been out of action for two weeks after he sustained a foot injury. However, he is winning the race to be fit for the visit of the Spanish outfit to Ibrox after a scan revealed no major damage.
If Broadfoot is passed fit, the news will come as a huge boost for Rangers boss Walter Smith as the player excelled in the previous group stage matches, a draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford and a home win over Turkish champions Bursaspor.
However, if Broadfoot fails to make it for Wednesday, either Richard Foster — who is on loan from Aberdeen — or Andy Webster will be drafted into the right-back position with Sasa Papac switching to the left and David Weir and Madjid Bougherra in the middle.
'Good news from scan'
Smith revealed on Tuesday that: "We have good news from the scan Kirk had on his foot. There is some bone bruising but nothing that should prevent him from training and playing. So we will see how he is today after the training session. If he is not available
for Wednesday he will be available for Sunday (when Rangers face Celtic).
"If Kirk does not make the game it might cause us to have a bit of a re-think over what we will do but we will see. We are more hopeful of getting him that we were a couple of days ago. However, we think that Kirk has a chance. He had not trained for the
last couple of weeks but he is back in training today and as I say we will see how he is.”
