Rangers' Steven Davis says Valencia game is huge
Rangers midfielder Steven Davis has described the Scottish Premier League champions’ UEFA Champions League match against Valencia as crucial, especially if his side is to progress from the group stage of the competition.
The Ibrox club has claimed four points form their first two matches, a goalless draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United and a win over Turkish champions Bursaspor in Glasgow — Ranger’s first win of the competition in three years.
On Wednesday, 20 October, Walter Smith’s men will welcome La Liga side Valencia to Scotland. Over the summer, Valencia sold their star duo David Villa and David Silva to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively in a bid to ease their considerable debts.
That led to suggestions that the club would be less competitive, but that has not proven to be the case. In fact, until a 2-1 defeat at Barcelona on Saturday, they had been unbeaten in the Primera Division and were at the top of the league.
As a result, Davis knows Rangers are in for a tough game, insisting that this is a ‘massive’ match.
"This game is a massive one in terms of where we are going to go in this group. Your home games are the games which will get you through and we have managed to beat Bursaspor. You want to get as many points on board as soon as possible and, so far, we have
done well, but that will mean nothing unless we build on that."
"European nights are great to be involved in. There is usually a great atmosphere and, on the back of a couple of good results to start with, it will be a great game. But we know what we are up against and we will have to be at our best."
