Rangers boss Walter Smith doesn’t expect new signings
Rangers manager Walter Smith is not expecting to receive any money in the transfer window, despite Rangers competing in four competitions with a small squad of players.
The Scottish club have a hectic schedule ahead of them. On Wednesday 27 October they visit Kilmarnock in the last eight of the League Cup.
Rangers then face Inverness Caledonian Thistle at home on Saturday 30 October in the league, before they travel to Valencia to play in the Champions League three days later.
Smith was asked whether he would receive any of the money provided by competing in the Champions League to spend on players.
"I don't think so. It doesn't look like it," replied the 'Gers boss.
The Rangers manager admitted that if they receive a number of injuries they will struggle to maintain their fantastic form. “We have shown we can acquit ourselves well with the group we have, but the aspects which are difficult for us to handle would be
the injuries and suspensions,” said Smith.
"That can upset our season, we know that, and we are just pleased we have started the season the way we have,” he added.
Smith has won every Scottish Premier League game so far this season and has guided Rangers into the last eight of the Co-operative Insurance League Cup.
Rangers have also been highly competitive in the Champions League and have a good chance of advancing out of the group stages.
However, Smith hinted that the number of matches could take its toll later in the season. The Rangers boss said, "We are asking a lot of a small group of players to handle the situation. We are already seeing that we are putting them under a little bit of
pressure.”
Rangers have failed to replace many of the players that left the club during the summer and Smith will hope that his team can cope with a small pool of players for the rest of the season.
