Rangers boss aiming for three points against Valencia
Rangers manager Walter Smith believes that he and his men can pounce on Valencia’s recent poor form to pick up three points against the La Liga side in their UEFA Champions League group stage clash on Tuesday, 2 November.
Valencia, who had begun their domestic season with a string of good results, have suffered disappointing results in their last two Primera Division fixtures.
They suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Mallorca on 23 October and were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Real Zaragoza. Both games were expected to be easy wins for Valencia, who have dropped to fourth place in the league as a result.
With the Spanish side faltering, Smith piled on the pressure and hopes to take advantage of their plight when the Scottish Premier League champions visit the Mestalla.
He told Rangers’ official website, "I think they will be looking at this game as a must win having lost at home already to Manchester United and to justify their tag as one of the favourites to qualify. They lost at home ten days ago and
they were held to a draw at the weekend, so maybe we can take advantage of that.
"When we looked at the group initially, we knew that all the games would be difficult, but the two in particular that stood out were Manchester United away and Valencia away. We managed to negotiate Old Trafford and get a point there and I would hope we
can do the same in Valencia."
The previous match between the sides, on 20 October, ended in a 1-1 draw after United States international Maurice Edu scored at both ends of the pitch.
Rangers are sitting in second place in the group, one point ahead of Valencia.
