Rangers boss seeks victory over Manchester United

Rangers manager Walter Smith has targeted a win over English Premier League giants Manchester United as he bids to progress into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League in his last season in charge of the Scottish Premier League champions.

The Ibrox club were defeated 3-0 by Valencia in Spain on Tuesday, 2 November, leaving his side with plenty of work to do if they are to qualify for the knockout stages. They are two points behind the La Liga side, with two games still to play.

Rangers' next game in the competition comes against the Red Devils at Ibrox on 24 November, and Smith is plotting a win over the club managed by his old friend Sir Alex Ferguson.

He told reporters that: "If we can get the points and try to put a bit of pressure on Valencia, all to the good. We set out at the start of the Champions League to do as well as we could in every game. We have acquitted ourselves well in the first three games,
not so well tonight, so we'll just have to try to get back on track in a couple of weeks' time.
'You can never tell what will happen'

"We obviously have a difficult game against Manchester United at home. They look as if they have safely qualified from the section but you can never tell what will happen. We'll have a good chance. Hopefully we can acquit ourselves well in our last couple of
games. That's first and foremost."

With Turkish champions Bursaspor yet to have claimed a single point in the group, Rangers look likely to be playing in European competition after Christmas, but Smith is eager to finish in second place and continue playing in the Champions League rather than
drop down to the UEFA Europa League.

He added that: "Valencia have a home game against Bursaspor to effectively qualify for the Champions League (last 16). No disrespect to Bursaspor, but you would put Valencia as favourites for that game so it will be difficult for us. We need results to go for
us but we also want to do well in our last couple of games."
