Rangers defender shocked at Antonio Valencia injury
Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot today revealed his shock at witnessing the horrible injury suffered by Manchester United winger Luis Antonio Valencia. The injury is likely to keep him out for the rest of the reason.
The two players were involved in what appeared, on first glance, to be a fairly straightforward challenge as they clashed at Old Trafford in a UEFA Champions League group stage match last night — a game which saw the Scottish Premier League champions, who
had been set up to play extremely defensively by manager Walter Smith, pick up a point in a goalless draw with the English Premier League giants.
Scotland international Broadfoot delivered a sliding tackle on Valencia and cleanly won the ball. However, a freak accident saw the Ecuador international’s left ankle appear to be trapped between the full-back’s body and the pitch. Valencia was carried from
the pitch and needed oxygen, before the player was taken to hospital. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed after the match that Valencia would need surgery on the injury and would likely spend the remainder of the season out of action.
Although Broadfoot was not exactly sure how Valencia’s ankle got injured, he said that he was stunned by the degree of the damage caused.
He told reporters that, “I'm not too sure what happened. I just slid in and looked round and his bone was sticking out. We tried to get the physio on to help him because you don't like to see that.”
"These things happen and hopefully he makes a fast recovery. I've never seen anything like that so close before. You see things like that on television and it's not good but to see it there in front of you, it doesn't look nice and I just hope he recovers quickly."
