Rangers goalkeeper may face ban
Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will discover if he is to be banned after an incident involving Chris Maguire of Aberdeen.
The Rangers goalkeeper lashed out at the player with a kick in Rangers 3-2 victory over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League match at Pittodrie on 26 September.
McGregor is currently on international duty with Scotland for their double header against the Czech Republic and Spain.
He is expected to play in both of the European Championship qualifiers and will be an integral member of the first team for the matches.
The Scottish Football Associations disciplinary commission met today to decide if McGregor was guilty of the offence and they will deliver their verdict Saturday.
The new chief executive of the disciplinary commission, Stewart Regan, headed a three man panel which included one former referee, one former manager and one former player.
The proceedings were chaired by Sandy Stables, an official of the Aberdeenshire and District Football Association.
If McGregor is found guilty of the offence he is likely to be banned for the Motherwell league match on 16 October.
At the moment, Rangers are joint top of the SPL with Celtic on 21 points. Both sides have yet to drop any points and Rangers will hope that McGregor is only banned for the one game as he has been instrumental
in the team’s fine form so far this season.
Rangers manager Walter Smith is likely to replace McGregor with Neil Alexander. Alexander has proved to be an able deputy and has played for the Scotland international side.
He was rewarded with a new contract last month and should be a strong replacement for McGregor.
However, the Rangers manager will be concerned with the goalkeeper’s lack of game time.
McGregor will have an anxious wait, but he will put this aside until after the Scotland and Czech Republic match.
