Rangers not looking to sell Kenny Miller
Rangers manager Walter Smith has revealed that he is not looking to sell Kenny Miller before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
The striker’s contract with the Scottish Premier League giants has less than a year to run, but Smith said that he would not be forced into selling Miller. The 30-year-old is considering a new deal which has been offered by the SPL champions, but if he does not extend his stay he will be able to leave for nothing next summer.
Contract offer made
Despite having brought in two new strikers in James Beattie and Nikica Jelavic, Smith wants to hang on to Miller. He told reporters that: “The contractual situation with Kenny is the same as the situation with a whole lot of players who're going into the last year of their contract. We made him an offer. In fact I think (chief executive) Martin (Bain) made him two offers now. A second one's just been made.”
Rangers will be looking to avoid a repeat of the Kris Boyd situation, where the SPL’s al-time leading goalscorer refused to sign a new contract with the club last season and moved to Football League Championship outfit Middlesbrough on a free transfer in the summer.
Smith was asked whether a bid for Miller over the next few days would pose a dilemma over the next few days, but said that issue wasn’t a concern as the club had not yet had an inquiry about the striker. He added that: “I don't think it's that tricky a decision. I've said we don't have to sell players, so that's the situation we're in at the present moment.”
Since returning to Ibrox in 2008, Miller has scored 38 goals in 85 games across all competitions. He has got off to a flying start in the new campaign, having netted four times already from just two league games including a hat-trick against former club Hibernian.
