Rangers star defends referees
Rangers captain David Weir says that Scottish referees are honest, but going on strike was not the correct way to resolve their dispute with players, managers and clubs.
The Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League fixture card for the weekend of 27-28 November has been put at risk after the country's category one referees voted to withdraw labour for the games.
The officials made the decision in the wake of several high-profile incidents that have seen their integrity questioned, while they are also living in fear for their personal safety.
Weir is the first figure from the SPL champions to speak out about the impending action and while he was supportive of the officials' plight, he thinks that there may have been a better way to air their concerns
He told the Daily Record: "Officials referee the game to the best of their ability. They referee the game by the rules. I don't think they have a look to see what colour the team is playing in before making a decision. They make a decision based on what
they see. They make mistakes and so do we. That's the nature of the game. It's not a science.
"They are worried about the attention they are getting and the ramifications of that. That's understandable but it's part and parcel of the job and what we do. We have to live with it. I have sympathy for them in the respect that nobody would like it and
it shouldn't happen. But in the real world it does happen. How it has come about is a shame because it distracts from the game. Football is the most important thing and that's what suffers.”
Rangers are scheduled to continue the defence of their SPL championship when they travel to Tannadice to face Dundee United on Sunday 28 November, but if the Scottish Football Association can not resolve the dispute in time, the game is under serious threat
of being called off.
