Rangi Chase surprised after receiving Man of Steel Award – Rugby League news
Rangi Chase is still in a state of awe after winning the Man of Steel title, beating off other players including Sam Tomkins of Wigan Warriors and James Roby of St. Helens last night, October 3, at the gala dinner in Manchester.
The Man of Steel award is the most desirable and prestigious honour in Rugby League and is one that all players aim for at the end of the year. Winning an award of this stature is not only considered a feather in a players cap but it also brings the club
into the limelight.
While comparing his on-field performance with other nominees for the same category, the 25-year-old New Zealander said, “I was shocked. I wasn't expecting it, the way Sam Tomkins and James Roby had played this year. It's unbelievable for me. I was overwhelmed
to get into the last three. I said 'that will do for me. If I do win, it would be an absolute bonus'. I'm over the moon.”
Chase further added that the recent season turned out to be a good one for him. He added that he wanted to streamline his play and was able to achieve the results he aimed for this year. Next year, he will start off with a brand new benchmark for himself
and his year will be planned out to achieve them all.
The young Kiwi player reckons that his best performance is yet to come and he will continue pushing himself further. By reaching out for new, tougher goals, the player will improve on his existing level of game.
Chase will be seen playing alongside his rivals for the Man of Steel award, Tomkins and Roby, in the English squad. He is all set to take part in the Four Nations Series starting off from next month after he joined England’s squad for the next three years.
The warm-up practice sessions are under way and fans expect great things from the player.
While speaking about his much-talked about move to the English squad, the young player said, “This is what I call home so I'm privileged to be in the squad. I didn't have to think too hard about it. I came over here knowing that I'll never get picked for
New Zealand. So that dream had gone.”
