The opposition’s leader in the Sri Lanka Parliament, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, has asked the country’s lower house to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to run the troubled Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
Wickremesinghe, in his proposal, has given the island government a time frame of six months to come up with a legally structured body to govern the country’s troubled cricket administration.
"I propose the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to look at a suitable draft in order to seek views of all parties. This can be done within six months," said Wickremesinghe, who is from the United National Party (UNP).
The opposition leader said that the committee should be given the task to propose constitution of the body as well as to suggest the candidates for various positions.
Wickremesinghe criticized the current set up of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). He said that people take coveted position in the nation's richest sports body not to improve the state of game in the country but to make money.
"This is an entity registered as a business venture,” said the Sri Lankan parliament’s opposition leader. “What is happening today is that certain individuals gain positions there to make money while another section is http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arthur-Percival-Day-c45927 to curry favour with politicians
to get into positions in SLC," he added further.
He was also critical of the expenditures the SLC incurred while co-hosting the esteemed World Cup event, earlier this year. Having debts of more than US$15 million, the richest sports body in the country is currently facing liquidity problems. Wickremesinghe
wondered that if the estimated cost of refurbishing old stadiums and building a new stadium in Hambantota was 1200 million rupees then how have they ended up spending 2400 million rupees.
Wickremesinghe also condemned political interference in Sri Lanka Cricket and alleged that since 2005 the SLC has been continuously run by the politically appointed interim committees. He said that that politics have ruined the International reputation of
the country’s cricket.
The International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) at its board meeting last month, urged the member boards to have a set up free of political interference.
ICC sent a warning to member boards, Sri Lanka, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, in particular, to get rid of political interference from their national cricketing matters. ICC has given a deadline of two years to come up with a set up free of political interference.
