The former Indian skipper and national selector, Dilip Vengsarkar, on Wednesday advised the young Indian cricketers to focus on first class cricket, if they want a national call up.
Speaking to media reporters, the 56-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Maharashtra-c811 batsman said that IPL and first-class cricket are two totally different formats of game, and urged the young lot to stop fancying the lucrative Indian Premier League as a “passport to Test cricket.”
“IPL and Ranji Trophy cricket are two different things,” said the former chairman of BCCI selectors during a media encounter at his academy in Thergaon on Wednesday.
“One needs to be mentally tough and should have really good skills to play Ranji and Test cricket. IPL is not a passport to Test cricket,” he insisted.
The IPL-mania drastically increased worldwide over the past few years, as it not only helps the young players earn cash but also helps them shoot into  the limelight with a couple of good performances in the season. But that fame is temporary and would not
help the youngsters build an international career, feels the former Indian skipper.
Vengsarkar, the veteran of 116 Tests and 129 One Day Internationals, also expressed dissatisfaction over the revamped Ranji Trophy format, saying it focuses more on quantity than quality.
“I am not very happy with the new format. It is more of quantity than quality,” said the former Maharashtra cricketer replying to a query.
“What is the use of playing so many matches? What will http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 players gain while playing with plate division teams? So I feel, more than the number of matches, the focus should have been on improving the quality,” he added further.
The Board of Currently for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 recently approved a major revamp of the elite first-class domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy. There will be no Elite and Plate Divisions prior to the tournament, according to the new format. There will be total
27 teams, divided into three groups. Each team will play eight matches in the league stage, while the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be five-day games from now onwards.
