Ranking has never been my priority, Rory McIlroy
With the intent of surging to the top position, prominent and reputed Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has acknowledged that rankings have never been his concern in golf.
As the 22-year golfer prepares for the showdown anticipated to begin this week at the WGC World Match Play, he is looking forward to perform well enough to make it to the top.
The elite or the top-tier of golf is expected to meet at Tuscan, in Arizona, for the beginning of the countdown.
"The rankings are sort of a by-product of what you do," said McIlroy. "I'd rather just concentrate on trying to win tournaments and trying to improve as a player. If I happen to do that, then hopefully the ranking will take care of itself".
On the other hand, World No. 1 Luke Donald is not in the mood for gambling, especially at a time when he desperately wants to retain his top seed position.
He will tee it off with former World No. 1 Ernie Els in the first round of the game that goes underway on Wednesday.
In addition to this, it is also important to mention here that Donald’s probability of taking any possible risk is further restrained by the threat he has been confronted with since the last nine months.
He thoroughly understands that there are golfers of equal competitiveness and taking any sort of risk will definitely not be beneficial for him.
Lee Westwood who, after receiving the prestigious Order of the British Empire, rests at No. 3 ranking will be facing Nicolas Colsaerts in his campaign opening encounter.
Interestingly, Westwood’s record at WGC has not been quite shaky and inconsistent. Therefore, this is definitely the chance for him of turning his haunting dreams into cherishing realities.
The excitement of the event has still not come to an end as players like Tiger Woods and Darren Clarke will also be festooning the already star-studded line-up of the event.
The two will be meeting after a decade to face each other in what is being termed as the ‘clash of the titans’.
Nevertheless, Woods might get an edge because of recent replacement of Clarke’s caddie Phil Morbey with whom he will be playing for the first time.
