Ranomi Kromowidjojo obtains Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one – Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Netherlands served
notice of her talent by devastating hopes of her competitors in the final round of Women’s 100m freestyle on primary day of the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Atlanta on Friday, December 16.
The 21-year-old Kromowidjojo proved her eligibility for the crown of short course freestyle event. She experienced strong resistance from her team-mate, Francesca Halsall and Natalie Coughlin of USA, who tried to escape her on the finishing end for gold
medal.
Kromowidjojo was the first swimmer to kick off from the starting blocks. Her quickest dive and strong strokes placed her marginally ahead of her competitors. With her irresistible efforts, she completed her first round of the swim with a
fastest time of 24.72 seconds.
She remained just 0.17 seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Halsall, who covered the equivalent distance with a second fastest time of 24.89 second. Halsall was trailed by Coughlin, who remained 0.43 seconds behind her former swimmer and ended her initial half
with an effort of 25.32 seconds.
The battle continued in the final 50 metres of the swim, where Kromowidjojo ended her final round with a timing of 27.15 seconds to post 51.87 seconds for gold medal. The gold medallist remained just 0.86 seconds away from the world record
of 51.01 seconds, made by Lisbeth Trickett of Australia in 2009. She also remained 0.68 seconds away from the European mark of 51.19 seconds, set by Halsall during 2009.
The gold medallist was trailed by Halsall, who completed her final 50 metres of the race with a timing of 27.06 seconds to submit 51.95 seconds on the board for silver medal. She was trailed by Coughlin, who covered her final round with an effort of 27.08
seconds to register 52.40 seconds on the bulletin for bronze medal.
Kromowidjojo was excited with her laudable effort in the 100m event whereas the podium finishers were called upon the medal rostrum for their invincible efforts after the session. In addition, the championship will conclude on December 17
after the completion all swimming events in Men’s and Women’s category.
