Ranomi Kromowidjojo sets Olympic record in Women’s 100m freestyle semi-finals – London Olympic Games
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Netherlands set the Olympic mark in the semi-finals of Women’s 100m freestyle on day five of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Wednesday, August 1.
The 21-year-old Kromowidjojo stunned the aquatic crowd with her scintillating form in the second round of 100m discipline as she shattered the Olympic mark of the discipline.
With her gruelling efforts and commendable pace, she remained considerably ahead of her challengers throughout the discipline and tapped the finishing blockade for top qualifying position with the timing of 53.05 seconds.
Her effort remained 0.98 seconds slower from the world record of 52.07 seconds, owned by Britta Steffen of Germany. She was followed by Melanie Schlanger of Australia, who remained 0.33 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing blockade as second position
holder by reporting an effort of 53.38 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was followed by Missy Franklin of USA, who remained just 0.21 seconds apart and finished third in the race by producing a time of 53.59 seconds.
Similarly, Franklin was traced by Yi Tang of China, who was only 0.01 seconds behind and posted a time of 53.60 seconds for fourth position.
Following that, the audience experienced laudable efforts of Jeanette Ottesen Gray of Denmark and Francesca Halsall of Great Britain, who engaged each other in a stroke-to-stroke battle for fifth position.
The duo tried hard to overpower each other over the finishing end but surfaced on the wall with the same timings of 53.77 seconds.
The pair of fifth fastest finishers was chased by Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus, who stayed only 0.01 seconds slower from her former finisher and entered the final round as seventh position holder with an effort of 53.78 seconds.
Subsequently, Herasimenia was followed by American swimmer, Jessica Hardy, who stayed 0.08 seconds away from her former finisher and hit the finishing blockade with an eighth best qualifying time of 53.86 seconds.
In addition, Kromowidjojo was very happy with her dazzling form in the double lap discipline and said that she would try to do the same in the playoff of the event.
