Ranomi Kromowidjojo shatters Olympic record of Women’s 50m freestyle – London Olympic Games
Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Netherlands shattered world record of the Women’s 50m freestyle on eighth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Saturday, August 4.
The 21-year-old Kromowidjojo, who occupied gold medal of the 100m freestyle discipline earlier at the championship, went full rampant in the single lap discipline and transpired on the finishing blockade for gold medal.
With her outstanding pace, she remained one arm stroke ahead of her following swimmer and touched the finishing wall in an improved Olympic record time of 24.05 seconds.
Her effort remained only 0.32 seconds slower from the world mark of 23.73 seconds, made by Great Britain’s Britta Steffen at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist was followed by Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus, who stayed 0.23 seconds apart and settled on the finishing end as silver medallist by producing a time of 24.28 seconds.
Herasimenia was chased by Kromowidjojo’s teammate, Marleen Veldhuis, who remained only 0.11 seconds slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 24.39 seconds.
Subsequently, the defending champion and the world record holder, Steffen appeared on the starting blocks as she concluded her race in fourth best place by reporting a time of 24.46 seconds.
The German swimmer was followed by Francesca Halsall of Great Britain, who was just 0.01 seconds slower and hit the wall for fifth position by submitting a time of 24.47 seconds.
Sixth best place of the race was secured by Therese Alshammar of Sweden, who was 0.14 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 24.61 seconds.
The Swedish swimmer was traced by Jessica Hardy of USA, who was only 0.01 seconds away from her former finisher and reached the finishing end as seventh position holder with an effort of 24.62 seconds.
Last spot of the discipline was obtained by Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of Bahamas, who remained 0.07 seconds apart and ended eighth in the race with a timing of 24.69 seconds.
In addition, Kromowidjojo expressed happiness over her second gold medal claiming effort of the Olympic Games.
