Raoni Monteiro and Mason Ho advance to next round: Round 3 of Super Surf International – Part 1
The third round of Super Surf International went down at the beach-break of Praia da Vila in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Saturday, June 4th. With only 24 surfers remaining in the competition, the battles were expected to become more intense as
the athletes pursued a place in the next round of the event.
The day kicked off with the first heat of round of 24 pitting Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro against his compatriot Yuri Sodre. Both surfers had exhibited some impressive surfing in their previous heats, making it anyone’s game.
Monteiro got off to a decent start, getting 5.17 points off his first wave and soon following it up with 7.50 points to finish with a heat-total of 12.67. Sodre put up a determined fight, catching numerous waves in an attempt to secure a good score. He got
5.93 from his first wave and required 6.75 off his second, but the scored turned out to be out of his reach and he finished with a two-wave total of 11.40 points. This allowed Monteiro to clinch the win and stay alive in the competition, while his rival was
removed from the contention for the event title.
The second heat saw Hawaii’s Mason Ho take on Brazil’s Jesse Mendes. Both surfers did not have a easy time in the sea due to the challenge presented by the strong offshore winds. However, Ho still managed to earn himself a couple of good scores to grab the
win. His first wave earned him 5.17 points while the second got him 6.17. Mendes was unable to cope with the conditions and only managed a 3.83 and 4.40 off his two waves to finish with a total of 8.23 points finishing in second place. The second-position
result eliminated him from the competition, while advancing the Hawaiian, Ho, to the next round.
In the third heat, the showdown for survival involved Australia’s Tom Whitaker and Brazil’s Bernardo Miranda. The local surfer, Miranda, had an advantage of surfing in his own backyard, with majority of the crowd cheering in his support. However, he was
unable to capitalise on the advantage and faltered in front of his rival. Whitaker caught a wave early in the heat to score 7.50 points off it and followed it up with 6.50 points to finish with a total score of 14.00. Miranda responded with a 5.67 and 3.93-point
wave, finishing with a heat-total of 9.60, consequently surrendering the victory to his Australian rival and advancing to the next round of the competition.
