Raoni Monteiro and Mason Ho advance to next round: Second round of Super Surf International – Part 1
After treating the surfing fans to some of the most intensifying battles in the first round, Super Surf International moved on to the second stage of the competition, the round of 48, at Praia da Vila beach in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Wednesday, June 1st.
The conditions prevailing at the event site were not in favour of the surfers, with four-to-six foot waves accompanied by strong offshore winds breaking at the beach. Even though the athletes were not short on talent, surfing under such conditions was not
easy at all and put both their skills and experience to test.
The round of 48 kicked off under such demanding conditions with the first heat, featuring Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro in a battle against his compatriots, Jesse Mendes and Jadson Andre, as well as Australia’s Nic Muscroft for victory and a confirmation of spot
in the next round.
The local surfer, Monteiro, took his time but eventually caught a good wave to throw down a set of amazing tricks to earn 8.50 points and take the lead. In his second wave, he scored 5.77 points to finish with a heat-total of 14.27 points.
His countryman, Mendes, emerged as a tough competitor and put up a determined fight to keep Monteiro from walking away with the win, but his effort proved to be futile. Scoring 7.00 off his first wave, he required another score in the seven-range to get
past Monteiro, but managed to get 6.77 points from his second wave only. Finishing with 13.77, he was forced to surrender victory and settle for second place.
After an impressive form in the last Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event in Rio de Janeiro, expectations were high from Andre in Santa Catarina as well. Much to the disappointment of his fans, he failed to live up to the expectations and
finished in third place after scoring 11.17 points off his two waves. Muscroft managed to surf a handful of waves but was unable to make any of them really count, eventually finishing in the bottom position with a two-wave score of 9.16.
Monteiro and Mendes qualified for the round of 24, while Andre and Muscroft were eliminated.
In the second round, a four-man battle took place between Hawaii’s Mason Ho, Brazil’s Yuri Sodre and Rodrigo Dornelles, along with Australia’s Adam Robertson.
Ho opened his account early in the heat with 4.60 points off his first wave. In the later stages, he caught his second wave to earn 6.40 points and finish with a two-wave total of 11.00. The score remained unbeatable and carried him off to victory, consequently
qualifying for the next round.
Sodre was also able to extend his life in the competition after finishing in second place with a heat-total of 8.93 points. He got 5.00 and 3.93 from his two waves respectively.
Robertson and Dornelles scored 7.27 and 7.20 respectively to round out the bottom-two positions. As a result, they both have been removed from the event title race.
