Raoni Monteiro and Rodrigo Dornelle in top form: First round of Super Surf International – Part 2
Super Surf International’s first round, the round of 96, continued at the Ptaia da Vila beach in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 30th. As the day progressed, it became increasingly difficult to ride the waves. However, that did not manage
to decrease the intensity and excitement in the various heats that took place.
In the third heat, Brazil’s Rodrigo Dornelles was pitted against Australia’s Nic Muscroft, South Africa’s Brandon Jackson and America’s Tanner Gudauskas.
Dornelles got off to an impressive start, locking his first wave to score 7.00 points off it and instantly moved into the lead. He followed up his first wave with a sensational second wave, throwing down a set of mind-blowing flips and turns, to earn 8.77
points and end the heat with a two-wave total of 15.77 points. The scored eventually carried him off to victory and confirmed his place in the second round of the event.
Muscroft did not have an easy time catching waves during the heat. However, he eventually managed to surf his first wave to earn 5.83 from it and later followed it up with a spectacular second wave to finish in second place with a two-wave score of 13.83
points, consequently qualifying for the round of 48.
Even though there were high expectations from Jackson and Gudauskas, both surfers failed to live up to them, scoring 8.84 and 7.77 points respectively. They had to pay dearly for their weak performance and are no longer in contention for the event title.
The fourth heat featured Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro and Caio Ibelli, Hawaii’s Mason Ho and America’s Kolohe Andino in a battle for survival.
Monteiro had come up with some pretty impressive performances at the last Prime event and was expected to carry his good form to Santa Catarina as well. Unfortunately, he was not able to keep Ho from clinching the win.
The Hawaiian surfer struggled to catch waves but still managed to ride two waves with enough skill to earn 5.07 and 6.10 from them and end the heat with a total score of 11.17.
In response, Monteiro managed to get a decent score of 5.50 off his first wave and only required 5.68 points off his second wave to deprive his Hawaiian rival of victory. The deed proved to be too much for him and he ended with a 3.17 deficit after getting
a disappointing 2.50 off his second wave. However, to his relief, he still managed to finish in second place and remains in the race for the event title.
California’s rising talent, Andiono, once again failed to do justice to the hype that surrounds him and ended up getting eliminated from the competition after scoring merely 7.77 off his two best waves. The local surfer, Ibello, also found his Super Surf
International coming to a premature end after a poor performance in the first round, getting an over-all score of 5.94 by the end of the heat.
