Raoni Monteiro downs Dusty Payne in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The 10th of 11 stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of thrilling action as Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro squared off with Hawaii’s Dusty
Payne in the 10th round of Round 2 at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, on Wednesday, November 2.
The battle for the Round 3 spot turned out to be pretty one-sided as Monteiro took control of the heat early on and kept Payne on the back-foot until the end to walk away with top honours and consequently advance through into the next round, bringing the
competition to a premature end for his rival.
The current season of the elite tor had not been going too well for Monteiro so far. He had failed to make a solid impact at nearly all of the events so far and seemed desperate to clinch one decent result before the season came to a close. Despite the desperation
and determination, things had not turned out any differently for him on the opening day of Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco as he ended up losing to Australia’s Matt Wilkinson in his Round 1 heat. The 29-year-old Brazilian remained disappointing throughout
the heat and eventually finished in third place. He now had one more chance of getting into Round 3, though he had to make it out of Round 2 alive.
Facing Monteiro in Round 2 was Payne. The Hawaiian had not looked too good during Round 1 either and ended up getting pushed into the second round. With the pressure of elimination hanging over his head, Payne needed to come up with a much better performance
if he wished to extend his life in the competition.
As the 10th heat of Round 2 got under-way, Monteiro got off to a strong start and soon locked a wave to pull off a combination of exquisite tricks, getting 8.83 points for the effort. Payne responded weakly with a 4.83-point wave and remained
on the back-foot.
As the heat entered its final minutes, Monteiro added an additional 5.83 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 14.66 points. Payne tried to break free of the shackles and locked a wave to give it his all, but failed to finish his combination of
tricks cleanly and only received a 6.03 for the effort. Finishing with a heat-total of 10.86 points, he was forced to surrender victory to Monteiro, sending the Brazilian into the next round.
