Question:

Rap vs Rock or is it really Black culture vs White culture.?

I may be opening up a can or worms but I often wondered this.

Do you think it more of a battle of musical taste or is it a battle of culture. Meaning that one my not like the other because they can't relate to it.(hood vs burbs) Or they just don't like the music and chose to listen to something else. Their background has nothing to do with it.

In your honest opinion, what do you think?

  1. yea its true because people think its weird to see a black person like rock and vice versa

  2. Definitely preference. I like both.

    A huge White Stripes fan!!!!!

  3. Rock and Rap were both started by African Americans...

Its up to you whatever you like.

But I like Rock by far.

  4. *Hispanic*

I don't think race matters, it's just personal preference.

But where you grow up probably does have something to do with it.

  5. thats really hard to answer since nobody really comes down on a white person for listening to rap but if your a black person listening to rock some(even my dad) look at you like your some kind of freak from a different world.

im mixed and i like a lot of metal and rock. rap just dosnt really apeal to me and i guess i respect rock more because it seems like there's a lot more work put into it.

  6. okay, i have a large opinion, and i'm gonna try and keep it short but i apologies in advance.

one of the things i notice is the fact that music is about your culture. You listen to music because you can relate to it, or because you grew up with it, or because it's all around you. But i don't necessarily think culture always has to be defined by race. America is an interracial country and the culture in one city may not be the culture in another.

Jimi Hendrix is one of rock's best guitarist and he wasn't white ... last time i checked.

Same goes for Eminem had great lyrics, and he became very successful in rap.

So i really believe rap vs. rock is more about the culture of the area you live in, not about race.

  7. well as a cracka from the block i like rap the most but i respect all music with meaning like metallica one great song about a man who was in war and lost his legs arms sight hearing and voice and how his mind is his own h**l

  8. am from the hood yea, but i don't like rock and roll you know nothing personal i just don't like it(the beat is off) am sure i speak for millions off blacks and latinos.

  9. M V is racist!.. & yeah its all on preferences...

examples of white culture in rap:

    Eminem

    Vanilla Ice (lol)

    beastie boys

examples of black culture in Rock:

Run DMC..mixed hip hop with rock

    Chuck Berry.

    and the legend James Brown

  10. In my opinion it is a mix of all types of things. For some it can simply be race and others taste in music. I am 23 years old and I am white. Personally I listen mostly to rock music. But there are certain rappers or rap groups that I like. To me it has nothing to do with race. It is simply the content of the music. When it comes to rock this is what I look for:

The singer must have a great voice and be able to sing all ranges and sound great to different types of songs.

The band must play music that is challenging and different. What I mean is I don't want to hear some pop punk band with a whiny singer and the band can only play power chords or music that sounds the same from song to song.

For rock I am mostly into bands like The Mars Volta, Circa Survive, Portugal The Man, Minus The Bear, Russian Circles, The Sound Of Animals Fighting.

For Rap I only like it if the song has meaning. I don't want to hear the cliche song about cars, money, and women. I like it when a rap song has real music and not just the same recycled computerized beats. When it comes to rap my favorite is a local group named Berto Ramon. They are all amazing musicians.

  11. I'm outta here..

    Everyone have a nice day.

    Thank you Simone.

  12. IF YOU WERE AWARE THAT

" many people of many cultures listen to both styles of music."

    WHY THE QUESTION ???

I LIKE IT ALL FROM OLDIES-COUNTRY-RAP-R&B-RETRO

  13. I'm not white........I can't stand rap music but I love rock.

  14. Yep, rap is racism, pure and simple.

  15. It's all preference. I'm black but I hate rap. RnB is ok, but its not really my thing. To me rock is much better.

  16. for some people it is musical taste, for others its culture.

    personally, i listen to everything.

  17. I like rock and rap equally. I also like techno and stuff but not as much. Im white as snow also...

  18. It has nothing to do with culture.  Many rappers are not from the "hood" so they can't even relate to that.  The guy who keeps changing his name (Diddy, p.diddy, whatever he goes by now) he grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood in Conn. and has never been poor nor has he ever lived in the hood.  A person need not have experienced what they're writing or singing about nor do they need to have experienced what the music is about in order to listen to it. If you think only "ganstas" listen to rap you're quite mistaken, it blares from the cars in many affluent white suburbs.

  19. I don't think its a battle of the cultures.

I'm white, and I used to listen to nothing but rap & hip hop, but now I don't listen to that kind of music anymore, because a black friend of mine introduced me to rock.

I think its simply a question of what music 'clicks' in the listener's mind, you know? Like, when I hear a song, I just go like, 'that sounds good,' or I say, 'I don't like that.'

White people like rap, and black people like rock, and vice versa.

    It's really just musical taste.

  20. ummm I think it has nothing 2 do of where u come  from....2 african americans rap is poetry and it releases stress and alot of other things....there is no versus when it comes 2 music because white people listen 2 blck people music and black people listen 2 white people music if u put it that way...What people fail 2 realize that rap music paved the way for alot of different types of music now....Just because we are from the hood and talk about alot of things dosent  mean that our music dosent make sense...Thats like me saying that i dont like rock because of the way they yell in the background and they are from the suburbs...But i like both types of music...2 me rap is poetry and i can relate 2 alot of it and i dont think its a versus thing at all

  21. The sad thing is you don't think you're playing into stereotypes.

I live in the suburbs and I listen to hip hop... Its all depends on ones taste.

Edit: Bye Ninja. Have a good evening!!... Or afternoon depending on your location.

  22. actually its a can of c**p

  23. hiphop was for the hood(mainly african americans) but grew out to to the most popular music while rock was for everyone
