Raphael Jacquelin wins Sicilian Open 2011 in Italy – Golf news
Raphael Jacquelin smashed a score of 12-under par in the final round of the Sicilian Open 2011 to relish a victory and took home the winning prize money of €1,000,000.
The 12th European Tour event took place at the par-71 Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa in Italy.
The French reeled four birdies against one bogey and managed to surge into lead, while rest of the field watched him savour his third European Tour victory. The 36-year-old won his last title in 2007 at the BMW Asian Open.
The winner was extremely pleased with his game and could not stop laughing while talking to the press. He said that he was looking forward for the day, as it marked the end of his dry spell which lasted for four years.
He was followed by Anthony Wall who led the field in the second round. The Englishman emulated the score made by the Frenchman, but failed to break his charm despite reeling six birdies. Wall carded 72 in the third round, which hampered his overall performance.
Three strokes behind Wall were Joel Sjoholm from Belgium and Jose Manuel Lara from Spain. The Spaniard made a huge comeback and fired three back-to-back birdies in the front starting from the fifth. He marched towards the back with the same pace and reeled
two more before encountering a bogeyman on the 13th and the 18th holes.
An eight-way tie was seen at the fifth spot of the leaderboard, which included Simon Dyson, who shot a 71 to take a share in the position.
Former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie crossed the realms of par in the final round, although he played with utmost vigilance throughout the 72-hole session.
The Scot teed from the front and despite the inclement weather conditions, reeled two birdies. He wrapped the round with four bogeys and a score of two-over par. He was joined by Peter Lawrie who carded a 66 in the third round. The Irish bogeyed three holes
against two birdies and finished tied in the 26th spot.
Alastair Forsyth compiled the course lowest, 65 with the help of six birdies.
