Rapid Redux ties up with Citation for most wins in a calendar year
The 5-year-old Robert L. Cole Jr. owned gelding, Rapid Redux, can’t stop losing and in the process he keeps toppling over records, but this time around he managed to tie with the great, Citation, a record he held back in 1948 during his Triple Crown winning
season when he won 19 on the trot in a single calendar year.
The gelded son of Pleasantly Perfect, Raid Redux, was going for his 21st consecutive win and though horse racing is a sport of enormous luck, anyone who had been following this gelding for a year or so shouldn’t have had any doubts that he wouldn’t
win.
David J Wells trained 5-year-old won his 21st consecutive race and then he tied up with Citation for 19 each in a calendar year on the trot.
“I love the horse,” Cole said. “The trainer has done an incredible job. I feel very blessed. It’s an incredible feat of luck and incredible skill by the horse. My dad talked about Citation all the time and it’s amazing here we are at 19 with Citation. There
is no way you could ever imagine claiming a horse for $6,000 that would be mentioned in the same breath as Citation. It is more than a million to one. I know that and do not take it for granted.”
Out of mare Thiscatsforcaryl by Storm Cat, Rapid Redux was sent off at 3 to 10 in a field of six, in the 1 1/16 miles long starter allowance and under jockey J Acosta, Rapid Redux, never trailed as he outhustled his opponents to take a one and a half length
lead after the first turn.
Awesome Rhythm and First Nite chased Rapid Redux through a half mile in 48.13 seconds and siux furlongs in 1 minute and 13.05 seconds.
At the eighth pole, Rapid Redux was three lengths ahead of Awesome Rhythm and around the closing stages Acosta stopped pushing Rapid Redux but Awesome Rhythm then showed that he got a little left in the tank and went for it, but luckily for Rapid Redux the
wire came just in time.
He covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 45.08 seconds holding off a late charge from Awesome Rhythm, who finished half a length short of the winner.
