Question:

Rapid palatal expander?

Today I got a rapid palatal expander put in. I have a few questions about it though. The doctor said that I might get a gap in my front teeth, how long will this take to develop? Also they said that the reason I am scheduled to have it for about 6 months(even though we are only expanding for 3 weeks) is because the bone takes awhile to build back up. If I were to increase the amount of calcium in my diet, will this help it build up faster, thus getting the expander out quicker? Thanks!

  1. The gap will start to develop quite quickly and get bigger-

The dentist will judge by time not by bone density so take calcium because it is good for you but don't over do it, it will not help you get your RPE out any faster.

  2. 1.  The gap between your teeth, called a diastema, will develop very quickly.  How large the gap gets depends on how much expansion is required.

    2.  Expansion occurs quickly.  Therefore, you will only need to activate the appliance for 3 weeks.  However, retention is required in order to keep the palate expanded.  It will take approximately 6 months for the bone to grow into the space that has been created from expansion, regardless of your body's calcium level.  I would be cautious with taking calcium supplements.  Studies have shown deleterious effects from taking too much calcium.  Taking calcium does not mean that the expander will be removed more quickly.

    3.  Initially, the appliance will feel uncomfortable and you will speak with a lisp.  You will become more comfortable with it soon and your speech will become normal as well.  Inform your dentist if the appliance becomes loose because this may cause some loss of space gained and may require you to wear the appliance longer.

    Good luck with your treatment!
