Try antique shops and flea markets in your area.  You will also come across some amazing finds at yard sales if you have patience and are not in a hurry.  I have seen some wonderful chess pieces at stores that sell hand made crafts from Africa, Indonesia, the Phillippines, and other countries.  One such store in our area is called World Village.
