Veteran NBA big comes out of retirement to practice with the Knicks during training camp....
The rumour that has been buzzing around in the NBA for days is now settled, as Rasheed Wallace is coming out of retirement to play for the New York Knicks in training camp.
Wallacehas reportedly agreed to a deal with the Knicks, that he will sign on Monday. It will see him be available for the Knicks training camp that begins on Tuesday.
The New York Post has reported:
“Wallace has told the Knicks he has elected to come out of retirement and join their training camp, according to an NBA source. The 6-foot-11 Wallace, who worked out with the Knicks over the weekend, retired two years ago after a disappointing season with the Celtics. The Knicks are expected to announce the signing Monday at Media Day. The first practices begin Tuesday.”
In his peak, Wallace was once one of the strongest front court players in the league, and part of the Detroit Pistons team that won the NBA championship in 2004. He was known for his shooting abilities, especially from three point range, and helped the Pistons open up the defence and spread the floor.
Over his extensive career, Wallace has averaged 14.6 point per game and 6.7 rebounds per game, while going 46.8 percent from the field. The last time he played an NBA season was the 2009-2010 season for the Boston Celtics. Wallace had a good outing an a back up big man for the Celtics, and stepped up his game in the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. However, when the Lakers won the NBA championship in seven games, Wallace announced retirement from the game.
His return to the NBA with the Knicks is being taken with a pinch of salt. Although Wallace is a great shooter, he has never been the best at staying fit, and reports from the Knicks practices are also stating that Wallace seems out of shape. Whether he stays with the team for the whole of the season and is able to make a contribution towards the success of the team is something which cannot be stipulated at this point of time.
