  1. The cages are expenisve because they are really well built for the animals. I would suggest raising money before getting the rats for a cage that will suit them best.

And aquariums are fine, they can breathe!! dont worry, and where ever did you hear that?

Just get like a 10 gallon tank and put some bedding in it, and buy some rat/hamster toys and some chews. get a hanging water bottle thing and stick it on the side. Make sure YOU GET A CAGE TOP!!! they can easily find a way out of the top, so please get a good sturdy top, they have them that are like chicken wire on the top get one of those, and you will probably have to put some kind of heavy thing on top to keep it on.

  2. Get the biggest aquarium possible. Preferably 55+ gallons. Then get a reptile hood (mesh screen) to put over. If you want to put a cage topper on it, then get a 20 gallon. Either or would be good. Although the 20 gallon with the cage topper may be better. The cage topper will secure into place very easily. It allows your rat to climb around more. Rats like to climb. Also, make sure that he/she isn't constantly walking on wire grate. It can hurt their feet if they walk on it too much. Only use safe bedding, never cedar or pine.

  3. I used to use an aquarium for my rats i just duct taped a metal thing and bent it so it would hook my water thing to the side of the tank and fill the tank with the ground corn cob bedding.... AND dont use wood bedding for rats. it makes them more prone to cancerous tumors......

  4. just get some wood for the bottom and side joints and the chicken wire the rest  better yet just get home depot or some one to cut out the right size plexi gass for  sides and front and wood the corner beams, top and bottom

  5. they actually need a quite big cage, bigger the better! go on sites like gumtree.com, they usually have cheap cages

  6. How many rats?

I'd start with 2. I'd also recommend a breeder... make sure you do get 2 of the same s*x. Otherwise they will mate and mate and this could kill your female.

Please buy a freddy2 as there great cages.

    :)

  7. Heres a few websites with instructions and tips on how to build one:

    http://www.dapper.com.au/cagebuild.htm

    http://www.curiosityrats.com/infodiy.htm...

    http://www.rmca.org/Articles/build.htm

    http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/...

those are cages of all different shapes and sizes i hope one of them is ok for you!

  8. I would suggest saving a buying a proper cage. It is hard to make a rat cage b/c you cannot use galvanized wire(which is the chicken wire, and metal hardware cloth sold in Home Depot), since it will poison them.

If you cannot afford the cage, then it is very likely that you will not be able to afford to properly care for the animal(no offense). How are you going to pay for vet care if an emergency comes up? Rats are very prone to respiratory infections(which need vet intervention) and can get tumors(which require surgery). Take you time and save your money, the last thing you want is to end up as another child begging for advice for their dying pet, b/c they cannot afford to go to the vet.

  9. I found a couple of sites giving instructions to make good rat cages out of inexpensive materials; pretty easy too.

Cages made from plastic storage bins and hardware cloth look like a good option to me.
