How much is it to have a male rat castrated in the UK, specifically the Derbyshire area in England? And what about females? They will be under 8 months.

  1. just separate them, the anesthetic is to much for something as small as a rat.

It will also be cheaper to seperate them.

    Phone your vet and ask!

  2. You can't castrate a female.

  3. Yes, you can get females spayed and males neutered. It's especially beneficial to females, because they are often prone to tumors in their reproductive organs. Spaying them eliminates this.

I'm in the US, so I can't help you with prices. Just shop around at vets in your area. Many places have different prices. Don't just choose the lowest price, though, ask them how many of these operations they have performed and their success rate.

  4. Hmm I dont know of any way that you can make a femal stop breeding but our vet clinic has neutered a couple of rats and it really was THAT expensive, around 150$... im not sure what that would be in the UK, and the anesthesia is very safe to use on small mammals. Its just expensive!

If you are going to keep mixed sexes together its much cheaper to neuter your males that it is to spay your girls. and in some cases it does help to take away some of the territorial issues, although this doesnt mean that any rat can go together , they still need to be compatible.  good luck!

  5. Just phone your local vet and ask them.

  6. if you have no intension of breeding rats keep them seperated, its got to be cheaper to buy a new cage than get a male castrated

  7. For prices you need to call around to different clinics, the costs of vet care vary so much from place to place.

You can spay and neuter rats and it can have many health benefits.  It removes the risk of cancer in the reproductive organs and can reduce the risk of some other hormone mediated diseases/cancers.

The important thing is to make sure that you have a good vet who regularly performs these procedures.  They should have a low morality rate.  Don't assume that any vet can perform surgery on your rat, most vets simply don't get the experience necessary to safely work on exotics like rats.

A few things that you'll want to discuss with your vet are details about the surgery.  What type of anesthetic are they using (isoflourane is the safest)?  What kind of pain medication will your rats be getting after surgery?

There may be something on here to help you find a good vet:
