Question:

Rat getting aggressive?

My rat is about a week pregnant. She's always gotten along great with her cagemate, but lately she has been really aggressive. She's been starting fights with her cagemate and they seem pretty serious, not playfighting. I didn't know pregnancy would make her aggressive this soon. Anyway, i want to separate them but i dont want them to be lonely. Should i separate them or wait for a while?

  1. She will need to be separated for birthing. I hope you don't continue to breed after this. Are the fights drawing blood? If so, separate them and perhaps let them have freerange time together daily until she births. You can reunite them after she weans her babies.

  2. Separate them. Also make sure you know EXACTLY what you are doing with this! This is nothing to play around with, you must know what your doing, and it sure as h**l doesn't sound like you do! Look up online A LOT of info on breeding rats. This is serious stuff.

  3. sit down and have a one on one about just where this agression is coming from , and some alternative conflict resolution.

    or try a boa

  4. Seperate them NOW.

If the fight again one could die.

They won't get lonely if you keep playing with them.

  5. you need to seperate them ASAP... because they could seriously hurt one another.... if your worried about them being lonely *which is completely logical* then just put them together for maybe 10 minutes a day under your supervision, if they don't seem interested in interacting with one another, then you just take them apart and leave it alone... she is going to have to be alone anyway when she has the babies :) because other rats, and even she might eat them.... just have a careful eye.... good luck, hope this helps :)

  6. This is perfectly normal for a pregnant rat. You need to remove the male now and keep him separate till the babies are done nursing and eat solid food on their own.

Put a few sheets of paper towel in the cage for the female so she can make a nest. Just drop in the sheets, she will know what to do with them.

Do not use wood chips while the babies are small, saw dust can clog their tiny nostrils and it can kill them.

Be careful when touching the female after the babies are born, she might bite you, especially if she cannot see your hand coming.

It is ok to touch the babies, the mother will not reject them if she smells your scent on them.

    Good luck!
