  1. I did it myself with my first rats many years ago, but nope, a tank is not suitable for rats. There are still books in print that say it's ok, unfortunately.

I agree with the answers that rats need rat company.

You shouldn't get rats from a pet shop, though. No responsible breeder would sell through a shop because they need to get feedback about the health and temperament of the line, but there may be a breeder near you, or a rescue centre.

  2. rats are happier with an open wire cage. Bigger the better for rats.

  3. no no no rat cage or degu/chinchilla cageonly plz

  4. you need something alot bigger than that. rats are twice the size of gerbils and you will need more than 1. try to buy a chinchilla cage or a ferret cage, they make great cages for rats

  5. Yes, rats can.

  6. No do not put a rat in that!

The smallest cage you can really get away with is the freedie one that Pets at home sell!

Also get two rats not one they are happier that way!

  7. That is not big enough for one rat and you should buy rats in pairs anyway as they enjoy company.  Also a rat would not need the deep base as they aren't as into digging as gerbils are.  Pets at Home does lots of good rat cages.  This is the only one on the website but there are more in store:

  8. Definitely NOT! Not sure if we would reccomend it for mice as amonia ( wee ) tends to build up in these type of tanks. If you are going to get a rat, please consider two.

Rats need as much space as possible. They are lively creatures who need constant stimulation. A two teir 'Hagen' cage or even a chinchilla cage would be more suitable for them. We change the cage around and introduce new bedding and playthings every time we clean them out. It causes a great deal of excitement :)

Please consider contacting your local animal rescue centre before purchasing Rats, as many youngsters are handed in due to 'accidental' breeding.

  9. Nope, you need a tank, not a cage.

and what is 'pets at home'?

is it a UK thing? I'm from the USA.

  10. not a good idea, rats are social animals and like to be together also that is way to small

  11. you could, but i

personaly i wouldn't. rats love to climb all over the place, along ropes and branches. also, their wee smells rather bad and a gerbilarium isnt as ventilated as a proper rat cage... i do think a rat would suffer a bit, but you may do what you want... just make sure you dont  upset the rat...  good luck!!

  12. No rat should live in a tank as they are prone to chest infections through the moisture build up.

Rats are better off in the ferplast wire cages made for chinchillas(preferably 2 tier. Take the wire base out and put carefresh bedding in there which is anti bacterial, absorbent and odour free.

you can also get corner shelves to fit in the cage for the rats comfort and hammocks
