  1. I's suggest to take them to the vet, but cutting them yourself isn't as difficult as it sounds, although you'll probably need two people to do the job! Have one person holding the rat still (not squeezing though!) while the other just clips off the veeerryyy end. a few millimetres is all I do at a time, just so the nails aren't razor-sharp or anything. Not too sure on the cost, but I assume it's just the cost of a regular check-up/appointment?

  2. The first time, take her to Petsmart, or Petco, tell them to show you how to do it....

You will have to pay the first time, but then you can do it yourself...don't take chances..one nick could cause shock or a lot of bleeding.  Good luck..

  3. Use a tiny cut up nail filer.

I use nail filers for my dogs.

    :)

  4. I HAVE cut my rats nails before but I don't like to do it cause im afraid ill cut off their toes, you don't have to clip them,at first they will scratch your skin, but after a month or so you wont be able to feel it I promise you'll be so used to it....thats how it is with me and my friend....

  5. You can have the vet show you how to do it the first time. It's tricky. You want to cut just the very tips off and avoid the pink inside the nail (that's the quick). If you cut the quick it will bleed. You can use flour or corn starch to stop the bleeding.

  6. No, you do not really need to cut their nails. I NEVER cut my rats nails. If you have floorboards or hard surfaces in your home, you should not need to clip it`s nails, as when it is running about, the wood will gnaw them down. If you think that her nails are getting too long and beginning to give you cuts or scratches or dig into your skin and you don`t have any hard surfaces in your home, you can. It may be hard because most rats may have not seen clippers before and get scared and plus it will be even more harder getting your rat to sit still!

You may want to visit the vet and he/she will show you how to clip their nails.

Be careful that you do not cut the quick as it will bleed just like if you were cutting your own nails.

Here are some websites that tell you how to cut your rat`s nails:

Good luck, cutting your rat`s nails! I hope this helps.

  7. There are several ways to cut/trim their nails. You don't have to, but if they get too long, you may run into trouble. (Like them scratching themselves too hard, causing them to cut their skin.)

You can buy a trimmer at the petstore (it may be for ferrets.), and you'll have to have rats that trust you and will let you hold them. That way, it's easier for you to hold them still and cut the nails. Make sure to not go too far! You don't want to cut off the part where there is blood. It hurts horribly, and it bleeds a lot. You can also have their nails trimmed by having a sanitized brick in the cage, at a place they go often so their nails rub against that and get trimmed down. I also think Wodent Wheels have the option of having a rough running track for the purpose of nail trimming.

Yes, you can go to the vet to get it done as well. I'm not sure how much it costs. I'd think that it varies, depending on where you live.

Cut them as often as needed, although it shouldn't be too often... Good luck! Rats are great pets.

  8. hi, i have three rats and i have never clipped any of their nails. i have also never been scratched by one of them except for when they get scared. but once you two get used to each other your new pet should be fine. rats are one of the best pets i have ever had.
