Question:

Rat pneumonia: What are the symptoms?

I keep asking about what could be wrong with my rat.

Some people say it's flat out pneumonia, and some say that it could just be the begining stages of mycplasma.

Without going to the vet, how could I know for sure.

I am going to go to a vet, but if it's pneumonia, she might not last until tomorrow morning, when I plan on taking her.

  1. if you listen to the lungs and its a rattling noise its mycoplasma. rats with mycoplasma also develop red tears from there nose and eyes which is actually porphyrin, but it looks like blood. pneumonia has a more fluidy sound when you listen to the lungs, and the red tears dont usually occur

    go to a vet

  2. I don't believe there is a way for you to tell the difference without veterinary help. You need a vet to listen to the chest cavity and even more useful to the vet is to take x-rays of the chest. Usually, a mycoplasma infection advances into bronchpneumonia.

I wish there was a better answer here.

Try to keep her eating for now. Take her to the vet tomorrow asap.
