Question:

Rat respiratory infection...?

I'v called around to the vets in my area and none of them specialize in small animals. I don't want to risk taking my pet to a place where they have no clue what they're doing. So far I'm been giving her a mixture of manuka honey, apple cider vinegar, vitamin c power, propolis tnicture, fennel extract, peppermint oil, moss extract, eucalyptus oil, clove leaf oil and tea tree oil. I put a very small amount in her water and she doesn't mind the taste. My mom gives this to me for a cough/cold. It helps to boost the immune system and relive congestion. I just want to know if this will help a rat. Any advice no matter how small would be very much appreciated.

Btw the rat in question has been quarantined so she doesn't get my other ratties sick. A day after I got her she started to sneeze and sound congested. She was already in quarantine so I have no fear about my other rats.

  1. Here's some recommended rat vet lists, I hope you can find one near you!:

  2. For URIs (upper resp. infections) the best antibiotic combo is Baytril/Doxy. You have to treat it VERY aggressively, or the infection lingers. Call around again, and see if any of the vets would be willing to see the rats, or even just call in a prescription. If not, widen your area a little bit. If there are really no vets in the area, try ordering the antibiotics online. I've never had to do this, personally, but it's better than nothing.

As for your mixture, I don't know what that would do to a rat. There doesn't seem to be anything toxic in there. To make sure she gets it, though, you might want to try mixing a small amount with some yogurt or something, and having her l**k it off your finger or a spoon. That way, you can be sure she's getting all of it.

  3. There are many harmful chemicals that are in many human meds. that can/will hurt a rat. but from the list of things that you showed, none of them seem to sound harmful. i myselfe have nevr tried this treatment, but hey, it might just work!!  when my rat was sick, i gave her plenty of vitamin C, D, & A. these vitamins help boost her immune system and cure colds!  give her plenty of veggies along with what ur giving her already!!
