Question:

Rat toilet training?

Hi.

I've heard people mention things about their rats being toilet trained, and that they use a litter tray for them to go in. Is this true? If it is, how do you train your rat to do this?

Thanks :-)

  1. Well, most rats choose a specific corner of their cage that they like to use as a restroom. This is more common for neat females, but some males might do it on their own, too. Just place a little box in there with the soiled litter, and repeat. If you find any waste, but it in the box. They should get the picture that this is where they are supposed to go to the restroom.

This is most likely not going to work for pee, especially not for boys that scent mark their cage, but it works quite well for poops if you persist.

  2. First get your rats used to whatever type of bedding you want to use.  See where in the cage they like to go to the bathroom, and put a box in that corner with the bedding they're used to.

In the beginning they might get in there 50% of the time.  You can help them understand by throwing errant poops in the tray so it smells like the toilet to them.  It will take patience, but definitely worth it.

Other suggestions I've seen online is to give them a treat when you catch them going in the tray or if you think they're going to go, quick put them in the box.  At least for my girls, when they wake up for a nap they usually go somewhere to pee.

This being said, you might only get 80-90% of the p**p in the box, and peeing probably more like 70%.  I have a tall cage with the box on the bottom, so sometimes my girls are lazy while sleeping in the top, and will just walk out, pee and then go back to sleep vs going all the way down to the bottom.  The plus side is, you cut back on the amount of bedding you use (and the cost) and it's usually not a big deal to clean up after them when they do have mistakes.

    Hope that helps!

  3. My pet rat automatically went to the toilet in the same spot.

If your rat isnt doing this, then keep placing his droppings where you want him to go to the toilet and he will associate this area with going to the toilet. After about two weeks, then he will do the same :o).

Im surprised he already isnt doing it.

  4. they do have actual litter boxes for rats (believe it or not) and they have special litter that makes the rats want to go in the box instead of any where

  5. Yes, rats can be litter box trained. You start off with putting a little corner litter box in their cage. If the rat goes potty outside of the box, then you just put the poo into the corner box (gloves on, or a scooper, of course).

Many rats will not be 100%, but they catch on eventually that that corner is apparently where they're suppose to go potty, so most of the time, they will.

I had 2 free roam rats, that I box trained in a little different way. I didn't care about them going in a certain corner. I just kept them in their cage for a while, then slowly introduce them to free roaming in the room. Eventually, I replaced the cage with a box of bedding. About 90% of the time, they used the box. There were occasional ''oops'' that needed to be picked up, but no big deal.

  6. hi! I train my rat in a cat litter box so it gets comfortable.it can dig and *p**p* then cover it up in a cat litter box.

If you get a rat {or already have one} get a cat box!

( It`s easy to train them like this)!!!

    yay!
