Question:

Rat trouble?

i have 5 rats i just got, i'm not having any trouble takeing care of them, except that they like to run around my room, thats fine, but, but the previous owner never potty trianed them, or taught them to come when you call or clap oanything, i know they can be taught but i dont know how to do it, any advice?

  1. what u should do to potty train it is to scold it. if it poops out of its cage, scold it. they will learn not to do it outside the cage.and also give them attention when they do it inside the cage. I hope this helps


  2. The first answer isn't correct. Scolding rats doesn't work. Rats are prey animals, not like dogs, so the same techniques don't work. Scolding will only make you seem threatening and they will become more fearful of you.

    Anyway, I've never met anyone who FULLY potty trained a rat, they still tend to pee when they want to sometimes.. But you can get them to p**p in a littler box pretty consistently. You basically just figure out where in the cage they p**p the most, they usually have a certain spot. That's where you put the box. Add some of the poops that are already in the cage, so they know where to go, and they take it from there.

    When you clean the cage for the first months, don't clean the potty (unless it's really bad, but if it is keep some of the old litter and put it on top of the new after you clean it).

    When they're out playing, make sure they have a potty available, too, or they won't mind going on the floor. :P
