Question:

Rats and mice in same room?

I am aware that rats are natural enemies of mice and rats will kill mice. That being said, can rats and mice be housed in the same room? Would the scent of the rats put too much stress on the mice? And would the scent of mice do anything to disturb the rats? I am just curious since I was considering getting mice in addition to my two rats (in a different cage of course), but I am afraid this may be cruel to the mice. Any advice?

  1. It could potentially cause stress-related issues.

Mice and rats both have a highly developed sense of smell and the rats may end up in a constant 'hyper' and worried state causing potential heart problems as well as standard stress illnesses, and ditto with mice, but in a constant state of fear.

  2. I've had that situation in my classroom for a long time, there have only been problems when the kids put the rats and mice together, despite warning them not to.  So far, no fatalities.
