Rats: male or female????

Question

i just cant decide! i've done tons of research but just can't figure out wich gender to get! i'd prefer help from people who have owned both genders, but i need help fast cause im getting my ratties (2) in maybe a month max. =)

i agree males are friendlier but they do grow bigger and sometimes benefit from a bigger cage which could cost more but i would choose boys anyway over girls

well i would say get two boy rats because they seem more lovable and they want to be around you and site with you,but if you want rats that explore get females,they are cool but you can never just pet them they are always running around.

I think that both genders are the same towards each other. But it seems that males are a little friendlier towards people. :)

I would get a female, if you can play with it often. Males are lazier and laid-back. If you can't get too much time on your rat then get a male.

I perfer females. Males, well, they have uglier behinds (if you know what i mean) and are lazier. It pretty much comes down to how often you can play with them. if you can devote 30+ minutes a day, get females. if you want a rat 'cause they are cute, but don't care if they do much, get a male. also, you might want to consider spaying/neutering because it reduces the risk of tumors

this is my thought

boys, they are more clam and will tend to just chill out with you. they dont need as much attention. there pee smells. having two may cause fights.

girls, they are hyper! but this may be fun for you. they require more attention. they dont smell as bad as boys. they are more pron to get tumors so you may wanna get them spayed.

but either way there great pets if you wanna save money and only need to spend little time with them get boys, but if you wanna be playing with them get girls but you will pay more if you get them fixed which will save you money in the long run

but all in all it is up to you!

im going to get two girls next time i get some!

I have owned both genders and I prefer females. They dont smell as bad as males. You can clean the cage everyday and with males they will spray or mark as soon as you put them back in the cage. And soon it will smell bad again. The good thing is males are more laid back. The females are hyper and run and jump around all the time. My old girls dont do this so much anymore. Female rats are very prone to tumors and abcesses. So we are constantly at the vet getting them lanced. Some of my girls have never had them but alot of them have. Tumors have to be taken off in an operation which is pricey. Males dont normally suffer from tumors and the only thing that you cant really give them that you can give females is oranges or orange juice or anything with oranges in it. Studies done show oranges can give males cancer. There testicles are something else ppl dont like which makes them like the girls better. They are huge and drag behind them(poor things). But both males and females make good pets but each has downfalls. I prefer girls where my friend prefers boys. Its all your choice. Do you want hyper or laid back? How much do you want to clean your cage? If you have 2 boys the cage wont smell as bad if you had more. Boys are alot bigger than girls so if you want more than 2 you are going to need a really big cage.  Ask some rat owners on some the rat forums on the web what they prefer and why. Might give you better insight on what you want to get. Hope I helped.
