  1. You should never only get one rat, always two, as they're very social and need a companion. :P

What I do when I'm excited about something.. is research it!! Constantly! ;P That won't get them out of your head, but rats are very interesting pets and there is a lot you need to know before you get one. Plus, looking for new rat information will keep you occupied. ;P

http://www.ratforum.com is an AWESOME resource. You should go there and read the boards, lots of helpful stuff there.

  2. Definitely use this time to research how you'll be caring for your (at least!) two rats.

Another website I find helpful is: http://www.ratguide.com

  3. Use this time to research into what it will take to own a rat (get at least 2 of them) and start saving to buy all the necessary items.  A good cage can cost $100+ and you'll want to buy lots of toys to stimulate their minds.

    Good luck!

  4. Try to be pre-occupied with something else until the time comes for the rats.

  5. First of all, do not only get one rat. They do much better in pairs. If you can only get one rat, do not get one at all. It is much more fun with two rats. (Or three, or four, or five...)

But it shouldn't be too hard to behave. Would thinking of rats make you not behave? Just try not to say anything about them, but you can silently look up things about them so you are more informed.

http://www.goosemoose.com is a great site for rat owners. They are very helpful and friendly.

If you really want to stop thinking about rats, read a book, play board games, play video games, hang out with friends, or maybe just looking them up in the computer will sastisfy your needs for now.

Good luck! Rats make great pets.
