I have had rats, guinea pigs, mice AND hamsters.
1. Mice can be pretty smart but basically indifferent to people. If you don't have a lot of time to spend with your pets, get mice instead of rats.
2. Hamsters are cute but antisocial and often bad tempered. Some tolerate being petted but others are quite prone to biting.
3. Guinea pigs are very cute but there just isn't much going on upstairs... unfamiliar noises/situations can cause them to panic.
4. If you're willing to give your pet a lot of time and love, I think rats are far and away the best choice. Rats can't be left alone all day in their cages like hamsters and mice -- they want and need time outside of their cages every day for play, exercise, and exploration. I've trained mine to come when I tap my fingers on the floor. They are the only animals on the list that you can actually PLAY with and can learn tricks. Also, if you want rats you'll have to get at least two (same s*x unless you want LOTS of rats) because they really need companionship. (The same is true of guinea pigs but not hamsters.) My rats are litter-box trained. Girl rats tend to be very curious and active; boys are more likely to become couch potatoes and are better "lap rats."
Hey, I don't just want a cute ball of fur for a pet -- I want one which loves me back! Rats love people. If you buy rats in a pet store (instead of from a rat breeder) they probably will be terrified of people initially because they haven't been socialized and it may take some time and patience to tame them, but eventually they'll become wonderful pets.
PS. A healthy rat does not smell; the cage only smells if you don't clean it...duh.
There's a website about rats called The Rat Fan Club run by a woman named Debbie Duccomun -- try googling it for great info and advice.

my 7 yr old son had his hamster for 3 yrs and was bitten frequently . when he passed away he wanted to get a rat . ill admit i wasnt all for the idea as rats are given bad press . but he won us round and he got 3 females stella, sox n rhianna . hes had them 3 month and they are the better choice in hamster or rat . they are very tame n friendly . dont smell a smuch as a hamster and are so clever . best point they have not bitten him , even when hes woke them to play , they are so funny to watch too x definately rat over hamster any day x
