Raul Ibanez sparks as Philadelphia Phillies edge past Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ left-fielder, Raul Ibanez had an extraordinary day with the bat as he scored a decisive run and went 1-for-2 with an average of .249 in the Phillies’ 3-2 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, Milwaukee on September
10.
In the first inning, Phillies scored one run to take a 1-0 lead. Hunter Pence struck a solo homer (408 feet) towards left-field to give a solid start to Phillies. During second inning, Brewers also added their first run to level the game 1-1. Casey McGehee
scored a single run when Yuniesky Betancourt drove a single-run shot towards centre-field. Later on, Betancourt moved to second base on the throwing error.
Third inning was score-less as the batters struggled against the mix-ups of curve and fastballs. Michael Martinez singled off left-field and Pence walked during third inning but Shane Victorino flied out and Placido Polanco got out to second base without
scoring even a single run. Similarly, Corey Hart hit a single-run drive towards centre-field but got out to second base when Jerry Hairston Jr. bunted a grounder towards left-field.
At the bottom of fourth inning, Brewers went ahead 2-1 by scoring a leading run. Ryan Braun posted a single run when McGehee was ground out to short-stop position. In the fifth inning, Phillies tied the game 2-2 when Polanco hit a one-run homer (379 feet)
to left-field. The game remained level until the ninth inning as pitchers threw superbly.
Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee struck-out seven batters in his seven inning pitches with an ERA of 2.44. He surrendered one earned run, six hits, two walks and two runs on his 100 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Lee said, “Hopefully we do. It's not like we
felt like we had to come in here and sweep them to make a statement, it's just playing the way we play and it's kind of the way it's turned out. It's a credit to the depth we've got.”
In the additional 10th inning, Phillies’ batters gave their team a 3-2 lead by hitting a tie-breaking run. Ibanez scored the leading or final run when Carlos Ruiz reached the pitcher on a bunt single. Later on, Ruiz moved to second base on the
throwing error of Brewers’ reliever LaTroy Hawkins.
Consequently, Phillies confirmed a 3-0 lead in the four-game series against the Brewers at Milwaukee.
