Rau’shee Warren beats Shawn Simpson to move one step closer to qualifying for his third Olympic team
The two-time Olympian and 2007 World Champion, Rau’shee Warren, secured a convincing 34-20 win over the 2011 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medallist Shawn Simpson on August 3, 2011.
Warren won in the flyweight division on the United States Olympic Boxing Trials.
The 17-year-old teenager, Simpson, was in total control in the opening round. However, Warren showed no reeling effects and clobbered his younger opponent with his experience in the second round to go in front at 22-12 before eventually finishing the matters
off in the third with a 34-20 score-line.
The 24-year-old American pugilist, Warren, who is one step away from qualifying for his third Olympic team, told the media he was confident of winning the bout as he knew his opponent will lack experience.
Warren stated he was a lot better fighter than young Simpson as he claimed he was able to deliver his punch even when he was off balance. However, on the same note Warren admired Simpson for his courage and braveness.
“I'm 24 and he's 17, so he's got a lot to learn,” Warren said. “I was 17 once, and I was defeating grown men. But I take my hat off to him for being confident.”
He added, “He came to me, but it was something I was expecting. When I got hit, I felt that I had to get the point back. A lot of times I was off-balance, and I was still delivering blows.”
The other combatants who won their fights Wednesday include Errol Spence of Desoto, Texas and Jesse Hart of Philadelphia, who defeated Amir Imam (19-14) in the welterweight division and Antoine Douglas (14-8) in the middleweight division respectively.
Jesse Hart in the meanwhile also shared his feelings after advancing into the winner’s bracket.
While speaking on his inclusion, Hart said, “(Fighting at) 178 was a test. I wanted to fight different fighters and I wanted to get a lot of different work.”
