Ravens’ Stallworth breaks foot, out eight weeks
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Donte Stallworth will miss nearly half of the season after he broke his foot. Stallworth was injured in the Ravens' week three pre-season game against the New York Giants. The team is unsure when exactly the injury occurred in the 24-10 victory but it likely happened during one of his three punt returns. Stallworth did not catch a pass in the game and saw limited action with the offence.
Coach John Harbaugh said that Stallworth will have a s***w placed in his foot and may return by the end of October. Stallworth was one of the new receivers the Ravens brought in this off-season. After trading for Anquan Boldin the Ravens acquired Stallworth as a free agent.
Stallworth is trying to prove that he is still a bona fide NFL wide receiver. After experiencing success with the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots, he had a pedestrian season with the Cleveland Browns in 2008. He was then suspended all of last season after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter in the second degree.
The receiver was fourth on the team’s depth chart at the time of the injury behind Boldin and Mark Clayton. Stallworth saw this season as a good opportunity to restore his name, reputation and production while playing for a good team. That opportunity will now have to wait.
With Stallworth’s injury that means that Demetrius Williams will probably earn a roster spot after all. Williams sat out the Ravens’ third pre-season game with a sprained ankle and his days as a Raven appeared to be numbered. With Stallworth’s injury he is now the most experienced receiver gunning for that fourth receiver spot.
Stallworth’s best season came in 2005 with the Saints. He caught 70 passes for 945 yards and seven touchdowns. Stallworth will now be facing an uphill battle to prove he is still a useful commodity for the Ravens.
