Having performed extremely well in the on-going One Day International (ODI) series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RD-Shah-c2298 Bopara has considerably improved his chances of a comeback to the Test team.
The right-handed batsman has so far scored 130 runs in three ODIs against the number one ranked ODI team of the world, with an average of 65 runs per innings.
Bopara and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Eoin-Joseph-Gerard-Morgan-c56032 have been fighting for a place in the middle-order since the last couple of years. The right-handed batsman was included in the Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, before being ruled out because of fitness problems.
Morgan also lost his place in the longer version of the sport after a poor showing against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760
earlier in the season. However, the right-hander failed to play any big knock.
Gooch, who is also a former Test captain, expressed that there are some players who are fighting for the vacant position in the team, but feels that Bopara is amongst the favourites.
"I don't select the side, but I think it's fair to say that Ravi was in the selectors' thoughts before he got injured. I'm sure he will be back in the thoughts - as will Jonny Bairstow and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707 - so they will make their decision who
they think is the best guy for that spot," the former opening batsman expressed.
The 27-year-old already has three Test centuries under his belt and is averaging 34.56 after a dozen appearances at the ultimate level of the sport. The right-hander however, is now an integral part of the Poms’ limited-overs line-up and is expected to play
a vital role in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, later in the season.
Gooch believes that the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 batsman is now an experienced cricketer and he must grab the opportunity with both hands, if selected.
“Bopara's been playing cricket, so I don't think he's done his chances any harm. He's been around the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 team since 2006-2007," Gooch added.
