Ravi Shastri, commentator and former Test cricketer, has backed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 to deliver the goods as a Test captain in the years to come but thinks that the Indian skipper needs to improve his batting in the longer version of the sport.
The wicketkeeper/batsman is considered to be one of the best captains of India’s cricketing history as the Men in Blue won the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup 2011 and also became the number one ranked Test team of the world under his leadership.
Apart from that, Dhoni led India to World T20 title in 2007 and has lifted a number of trophies for Chennai Super Kings, his franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) and Champions League T20.
However, the 30-year-old cricketer from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s disastrous tours of England and Australia last year, where his team lost eight Test matches in a row to lose the top Test ranking.
Many analysts and former cricketers believe that Dhoni is inclined to be very defensive at times and this strategy has led to the downfall of the World Champions.
Dhoni is currently averaging 37.32 with the bat in Test cricket, which is brilliant for a wicketkeeper but Shastri thinks that the Indian captain has the potential to improve. However, the former all-rounder has complete faith in Dhoni’s abilities as a leader
and believes that the skipper was defensive in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 because of poor showings by the bowling line-up.
Shastri feels, “There is room for improvement as a Test batsman. But as a Test captain, he has been made to struggle because of the inability of bowlers to take 20 wickets on foreign pitches. It has influenced the decisions on field placements and tactics. He
will get better as a Test captain in time to come.”
Unlike many other cricketers, Shastri thinks that T20 cricket is not bad for the game and expressed that cricket is becoming a global sport because of its shortest format.
"I feel Test cricket would survive because of Twenty20 cricket. Twenty20 is bringing more people to the ground, more people to play and more people to spend time in front of television,” he added.
