Ravi’s Song going back to run on dirt in the Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs
The 5-year-old Carl E. Bowman trained mare, Ravi’s Song is coming off two back to back second place finishes on turf, once at Churchill Downs and his last at Monmouth Park after running all her career on dirt.
Ravi’s Song will be called back to the surface she is accustomed to in the Grade 2 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs dirt track, run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 24 November, 2011, for three-year-old and up fillies and mares.
Despite doing very well on turf, considering she has never run on grass before, Ravi’s Song finished second to winner My Baby Baby in the Grade 3 Mint Julep at Churchill Downs over at 1 1/16 miles on 11 June, 2011, under her usual rider Corey Lanerie.
It was an unlucky day for Ravi’s Song as her amazing turn of foot just came a little too late to challenge My Baby Baby in the lead.
Her second start on turf was her most recent one in the Grade 3 Matchmaker also at about 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth Park on 31 July, 2011.
Corey Lanerie aboard the mare, Ravi’s Song went past the rampant Perfect Shirl to challenge Romacaca in the final strides, but she got nosed out after twice coming agonizingly close to post her first win on turf.
“I think she’s going to run big,” said Bowman. “Switching surfaces shouldn’t be any problem with her. She’s trained most of her career over this track and has shown before how much she likes it.”
The Kentucky bred daughter of Unbridled’s Song, out of mare Lu Ravi by A.P. Indy, Ravi’s Song kicked off her season with a win at Fair Grounds race track in the Pelleteri Stakes over at 1 1/16 miles on dirt on 12 February, 2011. She defeated Fighter Wing
and Age of Humor who finished second and third, respectively.
Her second win came immediately in her season’s second start in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles staying at Fair Grounds race track on 12 March, 2011. She covered the distance in 1 minute and 44.64 seconds.
